- Description
- The aim of this research was to use a dual experimental and simulation approach to investigate the influence of the combined forces of magnetic cores and electrically charged shells of coreshell composite particles in order to control their aggregation behaviour. Experimental systems were designed with magnetic core particles surrounded by a multifunctional polymer-silica shell. The results show that ferromagnetic particles can be coated in silica to produce silica particles which are positively charged at pH 7. Computer simulations based on Discrete Element Method mimicked the initial experimental particles by specifically assigning physical properties to the cores and shells of the composites. The simulations showed that for 1 μm particles, a surface charge density of 3.0 mC/m2 was needed to hinder flocculation for composites with a 150 nm silica shell thickness. A decrease of 48 % of the magnetic core radius was required to achieve a reduction in surface charge density of one order of magnitude. Interactions of magnetic composite particles may be controlled to design new processes to enhance magnetic separation efficiency. However, the potential scope of this combination of experimental and simulation work goes beyond mining and mineral applications since the same protocols may be used in pharmaceutical engineering, environmental engineering and lubrication technology.
